Narra la historia de una niña de padre japonés y madre china, amantes de la literatura y el arte. Cada cumpleaños, la niña Nagico recibe de su padre, un excelente calígrafo, una bendición tradicional japonesa, que pinta en su piel. Casada a la fuerza con un hombre al que odia, huye de Japón y se refugia en Tokio, donde trabaja como modelo. El fuerte sello que la une a la caligrafía sobre su cuerpo la lleva a buscar al amante ideal, que pinte sobre su piel como su padre lo hacía. Rompiendo las reglas sobre los calígrafos e incapaz de encontrar al hombre que la escriba con perfección, decide tomar la iniciativa y buscar ella a los hombres sobre los que escribir. Es entonces cuando encuentra a Jerôme, un traductor norteamericano, que puede llevarla a conseguir que sus obras sean impresas por un editor con el que el joven mantiene una relación.
